Sign the Petition

This is a petition that will be sent to various leaders in 2007, to ask them to do something for the refugees. Please sign it by leaving a comment with the following information:

1. Name, Country, School
2. Contact Details (optional)
3. Anything that you might want to say to them

Thanks for signing!

*EDIT: Please state your Name, Country and School- otherwise we will not be able to add your name to the petition!

*UPDATE: ASEAN agreed to create a Human Rights Commission on the 30th of July, 2007. This petition will likely be the first petition to be pushing for the refugees of Myanmar and Laos to be put under it’s spotlight!

______________________________________________________

Dear Sir/Madam:

    We are the youth of Singapore, writing to you today regarding the refugees of Southeast Asia, having learnt about them after watching a variety of videos and reading up on the issue.

    We are writing this letter to ask you to do something regarding the persecution that drives these refugees out of your country. We don’t believe you are behind the brutalities that forces these people to flee, we do know that there are rogue troops, local commanders, and a million different things that this persecution can be blamed on. However, why we write to you is because we know that you are in a position of great power, and can put a stop to this.

    We apologise if this letter resembles none of the petitions you’ve seen before. We are young, we don’t know how to write petitions; neither do we fully understand the complicated political pressures that you face, politics that can justify why attacks on civilians can be made in the name of cracking down on ethnic rebellions.

    However, what we do know is the instinctual feeling in our bones that it is wrong, that this is wrong. We find it difficult to understand why attacks are being made on civilians, and even more difficult to understand why there are no efforts to stop this.

    Sir, we would thus like to urge you to do what you can to stop the killing and attacks on the ethnic minorities. We know it is happening, and we know it is well within your power to put a stop to it.

    Sir, we may be young now, but in 50 years’ time you will be gone, and we will inherit the world you have created for us. Future generations will look at the persecution of these minority tribes in the same way we look at the persecutions of the past: mere barbaric atrocities committed by insignificant, small minded rulers, contributing nothing to the ebb and flow of history. These rulers are looked on with contempt, and future generations will mock at how “small minded” they are; their names live in the margins of history books.

    But Sir, be the peacemaker that ends this conflict, and history will look kindly on you. History will see that you have had the ability to bring a look beyond the conflict to bring peace, an ability whom your predecessors have perhaps lacked. History will see that you are a peacemaker, someone who has altered mankind’s direction for the better.

    We will be watching, Sir, and waiting to see what you will do, hoping you will be a peacemaker. We urge you: do something – please.

    Signed:

We’re supposed to look back at the past so we can learn our mistakes. But we as mankind are still doing it. There is hope. If governments can throw off their fear of acting rashly in power, if they will just have the guts to say a resounding ‘no’. There will be hope. And I will always hope.

I didn’t know this is happening to them, and perhaps the leaders don’t too, that’s why no one is doing anything to this. But I hope someone will. We’re being taught about community service and all in schools, I hope the leaders will show us a good example by doing something about this. Imagine those people, who were tortured, raped, killed and had other umimaginable acts done to them, were your family members, your own parents, your own children, your own brothers and sisters and relatives, how would you feel? Please, do something about this…

I may not believe to their beliefs. but what i believe is, every human feels the same pain if they were to be hurt. Death is a must for all but, this kind is simply a cruelty and evil-doings. Strength, i can’t provide but my support and my sincerity, together with other supporters of human rights all over will perish this moment one day. May these people find peace eventually. I don’t see the point in such political persecution. Political ideals should not be made at the expense of groups of people – they should be for the good of
mankind! This is precisely why the UN should do something about this ASAP!

No matter how much we might want to complain about how un-democratic Singapore may be, we should still be grateful for that roof over our head, for our country being free of natural disasters, for a stable political system.

When it comes to a point where the fundamental rights of a human being are not just ignored, but intentionally violated, someone’s got to stand up and not just say something, but try to get those in power to DO something, and this is attempting just that. Given the lack of co-operation on the part of the Burmese government and the apparent disappearance of the UN, a regional effort is of utmost importance, I do sincerely hope with the new developments in ASEAN with regards to human rights, something is done urgently.

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and tranpled underfoot.

You are the light of the world. A city on a hile cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put in under a bowl. instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Shame on the Myanmarese and Laotian governments. And on all those who could have done, or can do something about this but haven’t – for instance our own government whose relative silence on this issue shows only galling acquiescence or apathy. I’d like to ask our foreign minister if he cares or knows that people are being murdered in cold blood, among other things. Hopefully this petition and the new Human Rights Commission can change things – but judging by ASEAN’s record I’m not too hopeful.

“Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all – the apathy of human beings.” – Helen Keller

We all study science, at lower level and perhaps up till now. We pride ourselves for being in such a information -filled world, where knowledge is power, and a means to money. Yet, of what use is the knowledge, for what purpose is the technology we hold in our hands if we do not use it for the furtherance of the welfare of mankind? Forgetting (or more likely than not, ignoring) our basic human self – one that is capable of sympathy, of pity, of compassion – we are at best functioning subhumans. If we close an eye to others’ sufferings which seem far away because of gain that we see before us, it is shameful – may your consciences prick you. May you bleed.

The scene with the young boy was the most terrible. I thought he was dead, it was heartwrenching to hear his mother talk to him. Can anyone living in countries like Singapore ever realise the extent of the terror and fear running through them by the second each day? We’re all far too absorbed in other things like materialistic gains when there are still people in the world struggling with survival.

Raising a blind eye to this situation will really make any faithful man be absolutely disgusted with himself. If the Burmese government has any brains they would honestly stop all this and instead focus on building the country – that is if they have such a goal.

I really don’t know what to say. Doesn’t anyone have enough power to put a complete fullstop to all of this? SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING!!!

Everyone who’s being hurt is somebody’s father, somebody’s mother, somebody’s daughter or somebody’s son. They may not be you, or me, but that doesn’t make them any less human or any less deserving of life and freedom than we are. Someone has to stop this.

Something must be done coz it’s totally inhuman and we’re supposed to be like watching out and cooperating with each other on this earth. Look at the innocent childhood we are robbing from these children! They will grow up learning to hate instead of love. Is this how we want our future to be? A world full of hatred and arrogance?

Heavenly Father, I pray that you be with these people in this period of turbulance. Comfort these innocent people from their nightmares & walk with them Father, when they feel that they can hold on no more. Lord, I pray for them to open up their hearts to you so that you will always be with them and they with you.

Lord God, infiltrate the perpetrators with thy love and presence and help them see the errors of their ways so that they may make amends and turn from their misguided ways.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

its simply ridiculous that after 30 good years grudges are still being held against these people who can’t even fend for themselves from the tyranny and brutal abuse they are subjected to by sick, twisted individuals. These are tribespeople living in obscure communities; tribespeople but human beings nonetheless; human beings who do not deserve to be hunted down and slaughtered like animals.

Surely there are alternative ways to settle these age-long conflicts in a dignified and peaceful manner, aren’t there? Its about time people learn to bury the hatchet and move on with their lives.

Watching the videos was downright heart-wrenching, but reading the above messages was definitely heartening. With utmost sincerity I hope the authorities involved will hear the burning sense of urgency in our voices and the message that we wish to carry across so passionately, and that all these efforts will be translated into tangible, concrete action taken with immediacy to put an absolute stop to the grisly and unjustifiable massacre that has been ongoing. May we, the youths of Singapore today, make a difference.

It makes you wonder why human beings are any better than animals. Even animals don’t kill so indiscriminately, and (supposedly) animals don’t have a conscience. We were endowed with wisdom to steward the Earth, but we fail to protect our own kind.

youth of our generation worry about material things, physical comfort, things like dignity, respect, personal rights.

we have no idea how foolish, how superficial, how immeasurably insignificant our troubles are compared to these people. i’ve served in refugee camps, but this is something that has broken my heart again. as individuals, we can’t do much to save these people. but those whom this petition is meant for can, and i hope they will.

How can humans do such cruel acts to each other? You do not see wild beasts doing cruel to each other like that, for no practical reason. By doing this, aren’t we telling ourseleves that we can’t be compared to the wild beasts?
Please put a stop to this. The people that are being targeted are not rebels, but refugees that are only hoping for a quiet place to live in. So why the killings? Please stop all these cruelty. Surely everyone wants to live a future where there is harmony among all men.

Please stop this insanity and complete neglection of human rights. These refugees deserve to be treated with the respect and dignity like any other human being. From what I saw in the second video, even young children are not spared from the brutalities and atrocities of the army and relevant rogue troops. ________________________________

One can say that the notion of Southeast Asia and ASEAN is all but a socio-political construct. One can say that us young Singaporeans are self-centric and passive, caring only for ourselves. One can say that we are but students, wielding no power to effect major changes.

But one cannot deny the fact that although we are a plural region, Southeast Asia has always been a region entrenched in harmonious diversity. For that, we as Southeast Asians have to make a commitment to preserving this harmony and tolerance amidst our differences, be it in the social, economic or political sphere.

The killing of innocent people is an act of inhuman and incompassionate towards fellow beings. As a civilised nation, we have to (emphasize) save them. How? As Gandhi mentioned ” The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its people are treated” I would like to extend it to treating everyone especially those who are unfortunate! Lets work as a nation, as a developed and sensible nation. It has to stop!

It is unthinkable that a world so seemingly educated and global can condone acts like this, because by allowing, they are condoning. This goes beyond lacking compassion, this is showing an utter deficiency in that which makes us human, that which separates us from animals.
